Music as Memory

In the world of music, discovering something is anything but linear. It consists of a path that allows you to wander through your mood, memories, and things that occur in your day-to-day life. A song playing loudly on the overhead speakers, a recommendation from a friend that hits different months later when played.

The journey is not only through finding new songs or creating new playlists but collecting new and different versions of ourselves.

Hearing is known to be the act of receiving sound and listening is the emotional act of interpreting it. When we are listening, we are not only processing the audio but decoding the memories, feelings, emotions, and meaning. Listening requires being in the present and letting the sound shape how we feel. Between the action of things happening around us and something happening within us differentiates each other from noise and narrative. To listen is to participate.

Our music taste is a version of self-expression. Through our taste in music creates an archive of memories, identities, and our mood. From personal experience, my personality is shown through the playlists I made, each having their own mood and taste. Focusing on the emotional textures makes it less about the different genres allows us to understand the rhythms and tunes, making it a safe space and a place that is comforting.

Music is a great way to dive deeper into who you are, having another outlet to express your true identity.

My personal music taste is shaped through various emotions and memories. I like to follow the flow of what feels right and organize them into their own space, letting each mood live.

DJing is a new hobby that has been incorporated into my daily life. With djing, I find that you are shaping the room through various sounds. Yes, the Dj’s job is to press the play button but, their job is to also guide the energy of the room and build a flow that people can groove through.

With the different transitions being made through various songs creates energy and mood changes while blending into the atmosphere. This builds onto the dance floor where you become immersed into this world, creating a new moment. This is when the DJ reads the room and sense what the audience needs. Creating a balance of what to give and what to take away at the right time allows for a great experience.

As new music is continuously being released everyday, there are various genres that can be explored. This can cause an overwhelming feeling which can lead to feeling fatigue with finding new music. This can bring pressure to always stay updated with exploring new music.

To over come this is to allow the music to come to you rather than consistently trying to find it.

This can find you when you are out for a drive, walking through a store, hanging out with friends. Letting the music energy come to you rather than you finding it will help bring better songs that are more in-tuned with what you like without having the demand to consistently find it.

Algorithms are all about the patterns in your activity which then gets recommended to you. The human ear is about understanding your desire and what you enjoy. Through music, the algorithm focuses on what you like through the habits being made but it does not sense what you exactly want like a human would. As a human, we have the abillity to listen to our intuition and read emotions to understand the feeling that we want.

We understand the shifts of energy that occurs which will depend on the song that is being chosen to play. This is how songs are curated and made to play out loud or to build a playlist.

Choosing the right song when the mood feels right is filling in that human desire of what you enjoy listening to rather than the algorithm choosing any songs based on data and habits.

The environment of where music is played helps shapes the way we interpret the songs and how we feel it. The sound behaves differently depending on the space, for example, a concrete room, a warehouse, a basement, can have different sounds and genre of music being played.

Lighting plays an important role as well as it curates to the overall

feeling. It sets an emotional temperature of the room. A soft light can make the music feel more intimate while a sharper and vibrant light can make the music feel more energetic. This helps guide the experience and how they connect.

Lighting and space works together to support the overall atmosphere, energy, and vibe of the music.

Music has its way of holding amazing memories. Listening to a certain song can bring back euphoric feelings, allowing yourself to step into the first time when listening to a song. It makes you reminisce on those moments you thought you have forgotten. It also allows you to connect back to your past self, making you realize how much you have grown or changed since then.

The melodies that are being carried becomes emotional timestamps that we can go back to when the time is right. You get to relive and feel the moment again. Being able to go back an experience great memories through music is an amazing feeling and build encouragement to go out and make new memories while exploring new music.
